What is a Cord of Firewood?

One cord of firewood equals 128 cubic feet when stacked.

A cord of firewood serves as the standard volume measure in the United States and Canada for firewood and pulpwood. Traditionally, it comprises a wood stack measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet wide, and 8 feet long, for a total of 128 cubic feet. This volume accounts for the wood, the bark, and the space between the stacked pieces.

How Long Does a Cord of Firewood Last?

Several factors determine how long a cord of wood will last, including the wood type, burn frequency, wood-burning appliance efficiency, and the desired indoor temperature. Hardwoods, such as oak or maple, burn longer and hotter than softwoods like pine because they have a denser structure.

Typically, a cord of hardwood may last from 6 to 12 weeks as the primary heat source for a home in winter, with moderate use in an efficient stove or fireplace. This duration can greatly vary. A cord may last the entire winter in milder climates or when used alongside other heating sources. On the other hand, in colder climates or with continuous use to maintain high temperatures, a cord may deplete in just a month.

What is Kiln Dried Firewood?

Kiln-dried firewood represents the top-tier firewood product, dried in a commercial kiln for over 30 hours. It burns with less smoke, soot, and creosote than seasoned or green firewood. While more costly, kiln-dried firewood ensures a cleaner, safer burn.

With kiln-dried wood, you avoid half-burned coals and constant stoking. It ignites faster and burns hotter than seasoned wood. The drying process also makes the wood completely food safe by eliminating mold, insects, and live organisms. We deliver our kiln-dried firewood to Delaware County and areas beyond, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York City.

Our expert lumbermen begin with locally sourced hardwood logs, mainly ash, oak, hickory, and cherry. We cut and split these logs with our processor before loading them into the kiln for drying. The drying process, which takes over a day, removes all mold, live organisms, and much of the moisture.

Great Service

I’ve been a customer for many years and have always received great service. Always clean firewood. Their new splitter creates nice manageable sticks that stack easily and burn better. My wife uses the Bark Chip mulch throughout the yard and garden.
